Gene Affected
Origin This strain (Nephropathy model) was segrigated from SD strain (CLEA Japan,Inc.) by selective mating on the basis of total cholesterol level in blood.
Strain characteristics Under normal feeding condition, male SHC rats show urine protein and albumin after 6 weeks of age, and develop hypercholesteremia and hypertriglyceridemia (Ref1). The average longevity of this strain is about 30 weeks. Histopathological examination showed renal lesion in this strain is simillar to focal glomerular sclerosis in human (Ref2). Female rats show mild elevation in urine albumin and protein levels compared to male rats.
