Gene Affected
Origin A male rat showing circling behavior was found among the Jcl:Wistar rats at Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd. in 1993 (Fuji, 2002). (May 28, 2010)
Strain characteristics Circling behavior phenotype is controlled by a single sex-linked recessive gene clx (circling behavior linked to X chromosome) (Fuji, 2002). The main behavioral features of the abnormal behavior rats are intermittent circling and head tossing with the neck twisted. CLX rats showed no nystagmus after rotating stimulation and the result of air righting reflex test and negative geotaxis test suggested that CLX rats may have some defect in vestibular function (Fuji, 2003). CLX rats showed hyperactivity in the open field test. (May 28, 2010)
Breeding Conditions Maintained by crossing sib mating between clx/Y males and clx/clx females. The circling behavior is not seem to influence the reproductive ability (Fuji, 2002). (May 28, 2010)
