Origin The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) was established by selective breeding of outbred Wistar-Kyoto rats which showing hypertension by Prof. Okamoto at Department of Pathology, Kyoto University School of Medicine in 1963 (Okamoto, 1963).
