Gene Affected
Origin The mutant rat showing microphthalmia was found in the colony of Donryu rats at Central Institute for Experimental Animals in 1974. A pair of F3 rats was transferred to The Third Department for Anatomy, School of Medicine, Chiba University in 1975 and maintained by sib mating. F50 rats were transferred to Faculty of Agriculture, Utsunomiya University by Dr. S Sugita in 1991. (Nov 25, 2010)
Strain characteristics Hereditary microphthalmic rat. Eye-ball is not seen through the eye-fissure of DRU rats. DRU rats lack the optic nerve completely due to growth inhibition of the inner layer of the optic cup at the early embryonic stage (Kobayashi, 1981). Marked decreases in volumes and the number of neurons of lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) has been reported (Sugita, 1983). The thickness of some layers of striate cortex is decreased (Sugita, 1984), and the neuronal population and volume of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) are smaller than those of control rats (Sugita, 1992). These mutant phenotypes are hereditary but the causative gene(s) have not been identified. (Nov 25, 2010)
Breeding Conditions Sib mating.
