Gene Affected
Origin 1981 by Kohn from institutional albino rats of unknown origin at University of Texas. From Juntendo University to Kyoto University in 1992.
Strain characteristics Hydrocephalics can be detected at 1-2 days of age, and survive for 4-5 weeks. Dilatation of the ventricles is restricted to the lateral ventricles (Kohn et al. 1981). Hydrocephalus becomes evident in late gestation and is associated with an abnormality of the cerebral aqueduct (Jones and Bucknall 1988). Overall, penetrance in this strain is 40% but variable between litters, which may indicate the involvement of environmental factors of yet unknown origin, in addition to genetic factors.
Breeding Conditions Animals which don't describe the mutant phenotype are selected for mating.
