 Origin The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) was established by selective breeding of outbred Wistar-Kyoto rats which showing hypertension by Prof. Okamoto at Department of Pathology, Kyoto University School of Medicine in 1963 (Okamoto, 1963). To Shimane Institute of Health Science, Shimane University Faculty of Medicine, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University and to DMCRA in 1994. (Jun 1, 2010) 
 Strain Characteristics Hepertention, cardiac hypertrophy, nephrosclerosis and cardiac arrest. Control strain is WKY. 
 Breeding Conditions Good breeding performance.
