Origin 1983 outbred animals from Bio Breeding Laboratories, Ottawa, Canada ---> Karlsburg, start with inbreeding

Strain Characteristics 80-100% of male and female BB/OK rats develop spontaneously insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes mellitus at an age of about 90 to 130days; first autoantobodies are detectable at an age of 10 days; first sign of insulitis at an age of 30 days; all animals develop insulitis up to an age of 30 weeks.
