Elucidating Human Biology through Human-Mimetic Models and Translating Discoveries into Medical Applications
To understand biological phenomena, it is essential to directly investigate how genes function within living organisms and how genetic variations give rise to observable phenotypes. Recent advances in genome engineering technologies, particularly CRISPR-Cas9, have enabled precise and large-scale manipulation of genomes in vivo. These technological breakthroughs are opening new possibilities in life science and biomedical research.
Our laboratory was established in April 2026 at the Institute of Laboratory Animals, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University. Building on expertise in laboratory animal science and genome engineering, we aim to develop animal models that facilitate the understanding of human biology and disease, as well as to create next-generation genome manipulation technologies. In particular, we focus on two major research areas: the development of “genome-humanized models,” in which human genomic regions are introduced into animal genomes, and the creation of innovative genome engineering technologies that enable large-scale genomic modifications.
We believe that genome-humanized models will play a crucial role not only in elucidating the mechanisms underlying human diseases but also in evaluating emerging therapeutic approaches, including gene therapies and nucleic acid medicines. Furthermore, next-generation genome engineering technologies have the potential to serve as foundational tools that bridge the gap between understanding disease-causing genes, diagnosis, and therapeutic applications. As an essential infrastructure supporting these studies, we are also committed to the development and expansion of globally accessible rat bioresources.
Our goal is to deepen our understanding of life and genome function through laboratory animal research and to translate these discoveries into advances in medicine and healthcare. We look forward to pursuing innovative research together with students and researchers who share this vision. In our laboratory, members are encouraged not only to conduct cutting-edge research but also to gain diverse experiences through scientific conferences, collaborations, and international research activities.
